How to write Covering letter

Cover Letter is nothing but a simple introduction about you. These are sent when you are not meeting the hiring manager face to face. These are sent through e-mail. Your covering letter should be brief but should give a good remark on your profile. Along with resume, covering letter also makes a huge difference. Hiring manager will have many profiles to validate and a good cover letter will help you to grab his attention.

  1. Make sure you have provided your name, Email-id, contact number in the header of your letter
  2. Address with the name of hiring manager/concerned person. Avoid Dear Sir/Madam. Instead try to get their name and mention it in letter. Use the addressee’s full name if you cannot determine which title(Mr/Ms) to use. Be sure you have spelled the name correctly
  3. If you are applying for a particular position then mention the reference /Reference ID or from where you heard about this position. Study the position and the company which you are applying, make sure it matches your profile. Convey this in your letter
  4. If it’s a cold call letter(sent to hiring manager not particularly against any position) then explain what kind of position you desire
  5. Highlight your experience, domains you have worked and the kind of responsibilities you carry. Do not use too many “I”s. Avoid using smiley’s, jargons or short forms. Restrict the letter to 3-4 paragraphs giving information about you in a gist. Check for spelling and grammar. Use fonts like Times New Roman,Arial, Helvetica or Verdana. Colour could be preferably black or blue
  6. Close with a statement that indicates some action preferably Regards followed by your full name
